One of the things that makes an autistic brain autistic is the sensitivity level of the nervous system. The nervous system is made up of the nerves and the brain. It is responsible for gathering data from everything happening around you (what you see, feel, smell, hear, etc) and making decisions to keep you alive, based on that data.
A typical brain is pretty good at filtering out unimportant data and not overreacting. An autistic brain filters nothing and pays attention to absolutely everything. Not only that, it is very sure that normal, everyday things are trying to kill it. (This is not limited to autism! It is true in varying degrees across neurodivergence!)
To learn more about what happens when the nervous system overreacts and how to care for an autistic nervous system well, download this pamphlet! Written in an easy to understand way, this is a great, basic explanation to help parents of autistic children. It would be perfect for any professional who serves autistic children and is seeking to help their parents better understand how their child's brain works.
